Dr. A.M. Choudhury was born in Dinarpur Pargana, Habiganj district of Sylhet Divesion. The name of his father was Mr. Abdul Khalique Choudhury and mother was Mrs. Qamrunnesa Choudhury. Dr. A.M. Choudhury by his own admission, is a converted researcher on natural disasters. The colossal loss of lives in 1970 cyclone triggered his conversion-he gave up a lucrative assignment abroad and decided to devote his interests to tropical cyclones, Subsequently, he extended his work in other areas of disaster forecasting an management and built a lifelong career in this discipline.
A brilliant student, Dr. Choudhury was a Raja Kalinarayan scholar of Dhaka University. After completing his M.Sc. in Applied Mathematics in 1963, he joined Dhaka University for a brief period. Then he joined the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Committee (SUPARCO). He obtained his Postgraduate Diploma in Space Science and Ph.D. in Space Physics from London University in 1966 and 1969 respectively, He received on the job training in Remote Sensing in USA, Acnada and UK. He was an Associate of the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), situated in Trieste, Italy for long twelve years (1982-1994). As an Associate of this centre, he conducted research on various topics on disasters. Many of this research work found their place in the book. He came in close contact with the Nobel Laureate late Professor Abdus Salam and organized various workshops in Atmospheric Science in Dhaka under the auspices of ICTP.
When SPARRSO was formed in 1980, he joined as Research Director and retired as its Chairman in 2001. After retirement from SPARRSO, he worked on contract basis as the Executive Director of Bangladesh Computer Council for a number of years. He still works in a private capacity as a forecaster of cyclones and floods.
